Hi, I'm Kathleen...
While studying Communication Studies at Concordia University, I developed a passion for visual storytelling. I have created videos for a number of businesses and organizations, including a video for Women in Cities International in support of the 2016 International Anti-Street Harassment Week.
My passion for visual storytelling has translated into the tech world. In March of 2017 I studied User Interface Design at BrainStation in Toronto, Ontario, where I learnt fundamental design principles, best practices, and visual trends and patterns relevant to crafting website and mobile applications. I have most recently completed the Digital Innovation Skills Certificate through Wilfrid Laurier University in September of 2017, where I learnt Digital Marketing, E-commerce, and Project Management. Currently, I am taking a Motion Graphics and Visual Effects (George Brown College) course, and am soon to begin a course in UX Design (HackerYou). My goal is to combine my skills into the craft of storytelling to help organizations create compelling content and engage their audiences.
As someone who cares about the environment and sustainability, I was most recently a Toronto Organizer for the Fishackathon, which took place from February 10 to 11, 2018. The Fishackathon inspires the creation of digital solutions to address sustainable fisheries challenges. As an Organizer, I worked amongst a team to plan the two day event. This included local marketing and reach out, securing mentors and judges for the event, and managing volunteers.
In my spare time I enjoy running (having completed a half marathon), writing and volunteering. I am always eager to travel and learn about other cultures. I spent a university semester living in Paris, France and have travelled to 17 countries across four continents.
Inspiration
I never thought that I would follow in my father’s footsteps, but when I broke it down there were more similarities between our crafts than I had ever considered. My father was a computer programmer who had a passion for his profession. As I have grown up, I have realized the parallels between my father writing lines of code and me telling stories visually. We were both bringing highly personal responses to the issues we were grappling with and engaging in creating self-contained worlds. What my father instilled in me is a strong work ethic and the knowledge that anything that is done in love is done well.
